It would be hard for the present day generation to appreciate just how big a Hollywood star Madeleine Carroll was in her day.Madeleine Carroll was born Edith Madeleine Carroll in No. 32, Herbert St, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England on February 26, 1906, the elder of two children of my uncle, an Irish professor of languages and his French wife.In 1907, the numbering of the houses was changed so the house is now No. 44, Herbert St, which I visited for the first time in September 2005.Her sister Marguerite (Guigette) was born 18 months later, in August 1907.In 1912 the family moved to No. 7 Jesson Street, where Madeleine spent most of her childhood – a far cry from the glamorous world of Hollywood that she was later to encounter. Her own life was focused very much around the family home, influenced very much by her mother, Helene, who taught her French, as well as many of the social graces which would be of huge significance in furthering her movie career later on.Her early years were uneventful with many days spent dreaming about a future where she could provide her mother in particular with the things she hadn’t got then.
She had many happy memories of spending many holidays in Co Limerick, Ireland, where her father was born in 1875.“Family group taken on visit to Kilduff, Co Limerick. Madeleine is seated on the ground at bottom left, in front of her mother, whilst her sister Gigette is seated on the bottom right of the photo”
With her father’s tutorship, she matriculated from Birmingham University at the early age of 15, and by midsummer 1926, she was armed with her B.A degree, ready to teach or to go to the Sorbonne in Paris, where he father had studied before her.
1926 -1945
Madeleine proved a very bright student, and had been enrolled at the University of Birmingham with the intention of fulfilling her father’s choice of her profession as a teacher of French. “Everything indicated that I would spend the rest of my days teaching, ” she said years later. “I was shy, nervous … all through college. My father had set his heart on my getting an M.A. and all would have gone well if I had not joined a drama society in my senior year. In March 1926, and then a student in French, I got a leading part in the annual play called “Selma”, and somehow I did it as if I had been acting all my life. I understood then how people get ‘a call’.”Sir Barry Jackson, director of The Birmingham Repertory Theatre, saw her in “Selma” and offered her a contract which she declined on the insistence of her father, who vehemently disapproved of her theatrical ambitions. Receiving her B.A. in French with honours, she went to Paris for graduate study but returned almost immediately, determined to pursue a career in the theatre. Her father ordered her out of the house (they were reconciled only after her first film) and to support herself she acquired a job as French instructor at a girls’ school in Hove (near Brighton). Three months, in between unsuccessful acting job hunting, was all she could tolerate there, so she switched to tutoring privately in Birmingham. After saving sufficient funds to travel to London, she continued pavement pounding there until early in 1927 when she was given a small part in the tour of a play by Cyril Campion called “The Lash”. She joined the production at the New Brighton in February 1927 and after its short run was out of work again until Sir Seymour Hicks signed her to a five year contract with his noted touring company. Despite the unexpected brevity of the association, it enabled her to acquire some of the rudiments of acting technique, chiefly through the coaching of Hicks. There are several versions, with minor variations, of her entrance into movies. The most persistent indicates that she was released from her contract with Hicks to accept a part in a London play during the rehearsals of which she was screen tested and eventually selected for the feminine lead in a picture called “The Guns of Loos” (1928), which had it’s debut in Brighton.

Actress-comedienne famous for her acid wit. She was born in New York to a Jewish family in 1922. She grew up in Maryland where her parents ran a dress shop. By the time, she was twelve years old, she grew to be 5'9" and was the tallest girl in her school. She earned the title "wittiest" girl in her school, but Bea's family wasn't in show-business and she didn't think her family would support her dream. She then worked as a laboratory technician and drove a truck and worked as a typist in the Marine Corps. She also had a brief first marriage, which ended in divorce. Afterwards, she told her parents she really wanted to pursue a career in show business, and they supported her decision to join the New York's Dramatic Workshop for the New School for Social Research. She played classical and dramatic roles, and it would take years before she found her niche in comedy. Her breakthrough came on stage while appearing in the musical play "The Threepenny Opera" with Lotte Lenya. She was also a regular on television on Sid Caesar's show "Caesar's Hour" (1954) for one season in the 1950s. Then, in 1964, she truly became famous when she appeared in the original Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof" as Yente the Matchmaker. In this supporting role, she stole the show night after night. In 1966, she went to work on a new Broadway musical, "Mame", directed by her second husband, Gene Saks. For the featured role of Vera Charles in "Mame" she won a Tony. The star of the show, Angela Lansbury, also won a Tony, and they became lifelong friends. In 1971, Bea appeared on the hit sitcom "All in the Family" (1968) as Maude Findlay, Edith Bunker's cousin, who was forever driving Archie Bunker crazy with her liberal politics. This guest appearance led to her own series, entitled "Maude" (1972), in 1972. The show was a hit, and ran for six years, during which time many controversial topics, including abortion, were tackled. Bea also won an Emmy for her work on "Maude" (1972). During the show's run, Bea repeated the role of Vera Charles in the film version of Mame (1974), again directed by Gene Saks, but the film was a dismal flop. She also appeared on none other than The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) (TV). While doing "Maude," she also raised her two adopted sons with her husband Gene Saks. After Maude ended, her second marriage ended in divorce, and she never remarried. She became a lifelong animal rights activist. In 1983, she started work on a new sitcom, "Amanda's" (1983), which was patterned after British situation comedy "Fawlty Towers" (1975), but it didn't last long. In 1985, however, she got sweet compensation when her new sitcom, "The Golden Girls" (1985) hit the air. Co-starring Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, it was a show about four middle-aged women living in Miami. It was an immediate hit, and ran for seven seasons. All of the cast members, including Bea, won Emmys during the show's run. It should be worth noting that both "Maude" (1972) and "The Golden Girls" (1985) had to be canceled when Bea announced she was leaving each of them. In both cases, she left when she thought each show was at its peak and, in both cases, the producers of the shows realized the shows just wouldn't be the same without her. Since "The Golden Girls" (1985) was canceled in 1992, Bea had kept a low profile, appearing in only a couple of movies: For Better or Worse (1995) and Enemies of Laughter (2000). In 1999, she made a very successful and welcome Comedy Central Presents: The N.Y. Friars Club Roast of Jerry Stiller (1999) (TV). She did a one-woman stage show in 2001 for which she received a Tony nomination. In 2003, she reunited with Betty White and Rue McClanahan for a Golden Girls reunion special on Lifetime channel. Noticeably absent was supporting actress 'Estelle Getty' who was ill. The three lead actresses would make public appearances together for the rest of the decade to promote DVD releases of the "Golden Girls.

Ask Kate Winslet what she liked about any of her characters, and the word "ballsy" is bound to pop up at least once. The British actress has made a point of eschewing straightforward pretty-girl parts in favor of more devilish damsels; as a result, she's built an eclectic resume; that runs the gamut from Shakespearean tragedy to modern-day mysticism and erotica.Born into a family of thespians -- parents Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges-Winslet were both stage actors, maternal grandparents Oliver and Linda Bridges ran the Reading Repertory Theatre, and uncle Robert Bridges was a fixture in London's West End theatre district -- Kate came into her talent at an early age. She scored her first professional gig at 11, dancing opposite the Honey Monster in a commercial for a kids' cereal. She started acting lessons around the same time, which led to formal training at a performing arts high school. Over the next few years, she appeared on stage regularly and landed a few bit parts in sitcoms. Her first big break came at age 17, when she was cast as an obsessive adolescent in Heavenly Creatures (1994). The film, based on the true story of two fantasy-gripped girls who commit a brutal murder, received modest distribution but was roundly praised by critics.
Still a relative unknown, Winslet attended a cattle call audition the next year for Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995). She made an immediate impression on the film's star, Emma Thompson, and beat out more than a hundred other hopefuls for the part of plucky Marianne Dashwood. Her efforts were rewarded with both a British Academy Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Winslet followed up with two more period pieces, playing the rebellious heroine in Jude (1996) and Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996).The role that transformed Winslet from art house attraction to international star was Rose DeWitt Bukater, the passionate, rosy-cheeked aristocrat in James Cameron's Titanic (1997). Young girls the world over both idolized and identified with Winslet, swooning over all that face time opposite heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio and noting her refreshingly healthy, unemaciated physique. Winslet's performance also garnered a Best Actress nomination, making her the youngest actress to ever receive two Academy Award nominations. After the swell of unexpected attention surrounding Titanic (1997), Winslet was eager to retreat into independent projects. Rumor has it that she turned down the lead roles in both Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Anna and the King (1999) in order to play adventurous soul searchers in Hideous Kinky (1998) and Holy Smoke (1999). The former cast her as a young single mother traveling through 1970s Morocco with her daughters in tow; the latter, as a zealous follower of a guru tricked into a "deprogramming" session in the Australian outback. The next year found her back in period dress as the Marquis de Sade's chambermaid and accomplice in Quills (2000). Kate holds the distinction of being the youngest actor ever honored with four Academy Award nominations (she received her fourth at age 29).
Off camera, Winslet is known for her mischievous pranks and familial devotion. She has two sisters, Anna Winslet and Beth Winslet (both actresses), and a brother, Joss.In 1998, she married assistant director Jim Threapleton. They had a daughter, Mia Honey Threapleton, in October 2000. They divorced in 2001. She later married director Sam Mendes in 2003 and gave birth to their son, Joe Alfie Winslet-Mendes, later that year. After seven years of marriage, Kate announced that she and Sam amicably separated in February 2010. She was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her accomplishments in film and television.
